In Japan, onsen bathing is a long-standing tradition that dates back to ancient times. The country has thousands of hot springs, which were initially used for their healing properties. Over time, onsen bathing became a popular recreational activity, and today, it’s considered an essential part of Japanese culture.
If you’re planning to visit an onsen, it’s important to note that there are certain customs and etiquette to follow, such as bathing without clothing and washing thoroughly before entering the bath.
There are also for obvious reasons no photos permitted in onsen so although we visited several we just took photos (with a suit on!) at our private onsen in our room at Fufu Kyoto.
These are some of the purported health benefits of onsen:
Onsens are filled with natural hot water, rich in minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium that can improve circulation, relieve stress, and soothe sore muscles.
Onsen water contains minerals like sulfur and magnesium, which can help improve skin health and treat conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
They’re also believed to boost immunity and reduce pain and inflammation.
